Federal Student Aid

Who receives federal student aid?

Basic eligibility requirements:

  • demonstrate financial need
  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
  • have a valid Social Security Number (student, not parent(s))
  • register (if you haven't already) with the Selective Service, if you're a male between the ages of 18 and 25.  To register, click here.
  • maintain satisfactory academic progress in postsecondary school, and
  • show you're qualified to obtain a postsecondary education by:
    •  having a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate;
    • completing a ghigh school education in a homeschool setting approved under state law;
    • passing an approved ability-to-benefit test (if you don't have a diploma or GED, a school can administer a test to determine whether you can benefit from the education offered at that school)

How do I apply for federal student aid?

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by clicking here.  You can apply beginning Jan. 1 of your senior year and you have until June 30 to submit your FAFSA.  Apply as early as possible!
  2. Review your Student Aid Report (SAR). 
  3. Contact the school(s) you might attend.
