May 15, 2008 several Washington students had the opportunity to tour
Dr. Walter C. Low’s Research Lab on the University of Minnesota
Campus. Dr. Low and his team of medical and graduate students,
conduct brain research with particular emphasis on stroke and Alzheimer
Disease. Students learned that the math they are learning in class
are the foundational skills to the research being done: from pin
pointing the exact location for the insertion of altered cells into the
brain to the analysis of results, the algebra and geometry students
study in middle school prepares them well for whatever endeavor they
may wish to purse. In the same perspective, they came to learn how the
observation skills honed in science, the communication skills learned
in math, English and art, and the social context of issues, such as
Alzheimer, are all part of a necessary array of knowledge and ability
they will use throughout life. The trip was a follow-up to a classroom
presentation Dr. Low made to students in Washington math classes.
