OVERVIEW
The purpose of Study Skillsclass is to provide educational and behavioral support for students receivingSpecial Education services. Students are provided with scaffolded homeworksupport, pre-teaching and re-teaching of grade level Algebra and Englishlessons, and a positive behavior modification system. The instruction receivedin Study Skills is directly aligned with the Math, English and Readingstandards as Mr. O’Donnell has a co-teaching relationship with each department.
GRADING
Students are graded in StudySkills based upon participation (40%), work completion (40%), and behavior(20%) as measured by a seven-point daily monitoring system. Students receivingthe appropriate amount of points weekly can earn positive incentives.
CLASS STRUCTURE
Students are scheduled intoStudy Skills classes in numbers no more than 10. Ms. Rosemary Feit is theparaprofessional working with the class, ensuring that the adult to studentratio is at least 1:5. Small group learning is encouraged, with studentssplitting into flexible groups by grade level or by subject area. Mr. O’Donnellco-teaches Algebra with Ms. Allen and English with Ms. Glas, ensuring a familiarity with the subject matter in each department. Atypical day includes a journal entry to start the period, pre-teaching orre-teaching of the day’s Math or English lesson, followed by scaffolded orindependent homework time.
