At Washington Technology Magnet School our mission is to help kids get smarter. We have a collective vision of students engaged in learning, preparing them for a changing world. Washington is a comprehensive magnet secondary school with a science, mathematics and technology focus that serves students in grades 6 through 12. Students learn in interdisciplinary teams in specially designed “house” areas of the school. Washington is also a BioSMART school, which stands for Biological Science, Math, Academic Rigor and Technology. Students at Washington select one of two BioSMART pathways offering specialized courses in biomedical or engineering.

“Culturally relevant teaching is a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes.” Gloria Ladson-Billings (1994).
Future Fridays began in 2014, and is one of the programs at Washington that enables our students to encounter community professionals from varying careers that are ethnically diverse.
Each student in grades 7-12, through a survey, chooses a career to come, eat, listen, discuss, and learn. Student voice is important as they ask questions, both personal and professional, of the presenters. The Future Friday presenters come as their authentic selves, talking about their life’s path, adversities, challenges, and how they overcame to ultimately succeed at their educational and career goals. The students receive messages of high expectations, realization, and tenacity while seeing a person who is of their culture and who has successfully navigated their way to a professional career.
“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” ~ Isaac Newton
