| | | | | Mr. Courneya, LD Teacher | | | | Mr. Courneya | Good day! Welcome to my first Web Site for special Education.
Mr. Courneya is my name and I have been a teacher of Special Education at Washington for the past eleven years. Before coming here, I taught at the St. Paul Public Schools' Truancy Programs. Currently, I am one of the Special Education Staff that teaches Learning Disabled students. Our staff consists of two Learning Disabilities teachers, a teacher of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, a Speech Clinician, Educational Assistants/aides, School Social worker, a teacher of developmentally handicapped students and various support staff.
My schedule for the eight periods that we have over a two-day schedule includes:
Period 1 Prep time. During this time I Test Special Education Students or students who may be in the process of qualifying for Special Education services. I also complete Special Education forms that are due for various students. This is also a time to prepare assignments for the students in my resource classes. Meetings and other parent or agency contact is made during this time period.
Period 2. Resource for Special Education students takes place during this hour. Students with IEP Goals and Objectives are scheduled into this hour for direct instruction in the following areas: reading, language arts, writing and math. We also have time for homework helper, where students can work on their assignments from their regular classes.
Period 3: Read 180: The Read 180 Program consists of three areas or stations in the classroom. The area or station that I oversee is the Direct Instruction Area. Direct Instruction helps the students gain skills needed to complete the comprehension and other task related requirements of the program. The computer component is where students' read short stories and answer comprehension questions. Also included in this area are Word Attack and Spelling Skills exercises. The Silent Reading area gives the students to read for pleasure at a reading level of independence. Once they complete a book, the students have an opportunity to take a short quiz to help them see if they have been learning the skills from the Direct Instruction area.
Period 4: I C0-Teach a Math Class with Mr. Ward during this time. Please see Mr. Ward’s Web Page for a more detailed description of the subject matter being presented.
Period 5: Prep time. During this time I Test Special Education Students, who may be in the process of qualifying for Special Education Service. I also complete Special Education forms I assignments for the students in my resource classes. Meetings and other parent or agency contact is made during this time period.
Period 6: Resource for Special Education students takes place during this hour. Students with IEP Goals and Objectives are scheduled into this hour for direct instruction in the following areas: reading, language arts, writing and math.
