Attendance
There
is a strong correlation between being in class and being successful in
school. Be in every class on time and
prepared each day. If you miss, talk to
the teacher to get the work you missed.
If you are absent, have your parents call the school at 293-8830 and
bring a note signed by your parents the following day. Absences are excused for illness, religious
events, and family emergencies. You may
be assigned to attend Saturday School for each unexcused
absence. After three unexcused absences,
you and your parents will be referred to the Ramsey County Truancy Intervention
Program (TIP). If you arrive at school tardy after 8:15 a.m., you must have a note
signed by your parent/guardian and be admitted through the attendance office.
If you are absent due to illness more than seven times during the school year,
you may be required to have a doctor’s note excusing any further
illness-related absence. For each time you are tardy, you may be assigned
detention. Tardiness to class interferes
with your learning as well as that of others.
The teacher will assign students who are tardy to class detention. If you need to leave school early, bring to
the office before 8:00 a.m. a note signed by your
parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence. If you will be gone for several days for any
reason, bring a note to the office well in advance listing the dates you will
be absent and the reason.
Building Hours
Washington Technology Magnet is used for a wide variety of
school and community functions. Students
arriving before 7:45 a.m. or staying
after 2:45 p.m. must be directly
supervised by a staff member. Members of
the community use the Rice Recreation
Center and students are allowed
only with supervision by an adult.
Cafeteria
The
Washington cafeteria serves tasty
lunches, breakfasts, and snacks. When we
all practice good manners in the cafeteria, this becomes an enjoyable part of
everyone’s day. Good manners include
waiting in line patiently, cleaning your area, speaking in an indoor voice,
being seated the last five minutes before dismissal, and following the directions
of the staff members. Breakfast is
served free of charge to all Washington students each morning
at 7:45 a.m. Students riding a bus to school are
instructed to report to the cafeteria immediately after the bus arrives and
before visiting their lockers or classrooms. Only students eating breakfast are
allowed in the cafeteria at this time.
Nutritious lunches are served daily, and students are offered many choices. The cost for lunch is $1.75. Students qualifying for reduced price meals
pay $0.40 for lunch. Applications for
free or reduced price lunches are available from the cafeteria manager.
Credits
Students
must earn 80% of their total credits and 80% of their English and math credits
in order to be promoted to high school.
Students who fail classes will be given additional support through the
Washington Excel and student support programs.
Detention
You
may be assigned detention for correction of behavior or additional help with
class work. You must notify your parents
when assigned detention and make transportation arrangements. Detentions must be served before you are
allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities. Students who do not attend scheduled
detention will be assigned a loner detention or dismissed from school.
Discipline

Guest
Policy
Parents are welcome to visit
the school at any time. Please check in with
the greeter and you will receive a visitor’s badge. If any parent would like to meet with a
teacher, please contact the office for assistance in making an
appointment. School-aged guests are not
permitted during the school day.
Lockers
Locks
and lockers are provided as a convenience to you by the Saint Paul Public
Schools. A little practice will make
opening your combination easy. Only
school locks may be used on Washington Technology lockers. Students will be responsible for the cost of
replacing the lock ($5.00) if it is lost so safeguard your combination by not
telling anyone. Students will be
given their own locker and may not share lockers. School lockers are the property of the school
district and may be searched by the school administration at any time. If you are having problems with your lock,
talk to your homeroom teacher or to Ms. Feit, the locker coordinator, in Room
309.
Nonessential Items
brought to School
The
following items are not allowed on school property: fireworks, cellular phones,
handheld electronic games, pagers, headphones, and radios. These and other materials deemed to be
disruptive to the educational process will be confiscated and may be returned
directly to the parent.
Nurse
Our
nurse works with students, parents, and teachers in maintaining a healthful
school environment. Make sure you return your emergency card, physical form,
and dental card to your homeroom teacher so that the school has your parent’s
daytime phone number and medical information if you get sick in school. Students requiring medication must meet with
the nurse as soon as they know about it. Excuses from physical education and
other classes for longer than one day require a note from a doctor.
Pesticide
Applications in Schools
In
accordance with Minnesota Statute 123.B.575, Parents Right to Know Act, all
parents, guardians, and employees at this school are advised that an estimated
schedule of applications of pesticides is available in the school’s office for
review and copying. In addition, any
parent or guardian who wishes to be notified of any variation from this
scheduled application may be so notified by providing five self-addressed,
stamped envelopes to the school to be used throughout the year for mailing
purposes. The schedule and subsequent
notices apply only to pesticides in toxicity categories I, II, or III as
classified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, or a
restricted-use pesticide as designated by federal law.
School
Property
Textbooks,
locks, and other equipment issued to you remain the property of Washington
Technology Magnet. It is important that
you take care of school property and turn it in when finished. The school will charge an appropriate
replacement fee for textbooks, workbooks or library books lost or destroyed by
students.
Wings
After School Program
Washington offers a free after
school program called Wings for interested students. Wings takes place on Monday through Thursday
for the entire school year. Activities
include academics, athletics, and enrichment opportunities. Wings begins at 2:45
p.m.
and concludes with a bus ride home at 4:45 p.m.
